The Department of Mechanical Engineering came into existence in 1919 under the leadership of Prof. Charles A. King, the first Head of Department and Principal of the erstwhile Banaras Engineering College (BENCO), having steered through its establishment days and shaped its contours by his remarkable vision. Subsequently over the past ninety five years, the department has quadrupled, growing manifolds gradually to become not only the largest Department in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) section but surpassing all sections over the campus of the Banaras Hindu University.
The Department is known for producing and training the excellent minds of the nation. It has produced more than 15000 graduates and more than 5000 postgraduates. Apart from this, the department has to its credit many PhD's. Awarded during the period 1995-2014. The post graduate and doctoral program in the Department is well established and infrastructural facilities exist for studies and research in a wide range of specialization which include Machine Design, Production Engineering, Thermal & Fluid Engineering & Industrial Management. The faculty is highly qualified with a vast experience in various fields of Mechanical Engineering.

MES, namely, Mechanical Engineering Society, though a non-profit departmental organisation, is the very sole part of the Institution. Over the years, it has added feathers to its cap by successfully conducting activities not only limited to technical aspects but extend far to sports, cultural extravaganza as well as social welfare. The society aims to promote research and developmental activities in Mechanical, Industrial Production, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics and Automation. As rightly said "perfection consists not in doing extraordinary things, but in doing ordinary things extraordinary well." and its workshops, programmes and conferences serve the same. They have the lustre of their own, which promotes scientific information interchange between researchers, developers, engineers, students, and practitioners throughout the world. Fostering creativity among the students of engineering as well as high school through unique level of quizzes and problem statements, educating the backward and creating awareness among the people of villages have glorified MES over the years which still craves to excel further.
MES has recently initiated Student Mentorship & Professional Skill Development Programme to guide the students in a positive direction and help them identify their interest and pursue research in the respective field. Also, it focuses on activities judging communication skills, thought process, sharing of skills and spontaneous reactions to various situations etc.
When it comes to rivet engineering and management skills with a healthy body and sound mind, MES is the organization one can rely on. MES’s capability to grow and its immense success have made it stand out from the rest.
We live in a world where resources are limited, but opportunities aren’t. With the boundation of the resources and the exhaustiveness of the materials, it is important that we create the best and the most efficient systems. The older designs and ideas need to be scrutinized, and new innovations need to be encouraged. We need better models, better fabrication or execution, and better performance with novel policies. In short, we need to Remodel, Recreate and Reform.
With this idea embedded in its core as its official theme, COMET’17, Conference on Mechanical Engineering and Technology, organized by Mechanical Engineering Society, IIT (BHU) Varanasi, proceeds to provide the technological world with a new burst of innovations, based on the age-old scientific truths, but augmented by creative thinking and meticulous implementation.
