The Department

Overview

The Department of Mechanical Engineering came into existence in 1919 under the leadership of Professor Charles A. King, the first Head of the Department and Principal of the erstwhile Benaras Engineering College (BENCO). Over the last eighty six years, the department has grown four folds to become the largest department in the Institute of Technology as well as in the Banaras Hindu University. In the last five years, the department has produced 300 graduates and 125 post-graduates. Apart from this, the department has to its credit 7 PhDs awarded during the last five years. The post-graduate and doctoral programme in the department is well-established and infrastructural facilities exist for studies and research.

Mechanical Engineering Society

Vision of The Society

  • The Mechanical Engineering Society, IIT (BHU), is a non-profit organization, under the aegis of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT (BHU), aimed at promoting research and developmental work in Advanced Machine Design, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Management, Production Engineering, and Thermal & Fluids Engineering.
  • Over the years, the MES has transcended the orbit of technical undertakings to include sports, cultural, and social welfare activities under its purview.
  • The MES organizes conferences, seminars, and workshops to facilitate the exchange of scientific information and spirit between researchers, developers, engineers, students, and practitioners from all over the world.
  • Laying special emphasis on innovation, the MES strives to foster creativity among not only engineering undergrads but also high-school students.
  • The organization also works towards creating technical awareness and inculcating a scientific temper in people who do not necessarily hail from a scientific background, including the underprivileged strata.
  • The MES also conducts industrial tours for mechanical engineering students to give them a hands-on experience of the various manufacturing and designing processes to arouse their interest and provoke their inquisitive minds.
