Dr. Kota Harinarayana,the father of light combat aircraft Tejas graduated from Banaras Hindu University in Mechanical Engineering in 1965, earned Masters in Aero Engineering from IISc, Bangalore and Ph.D. from IIT Bombay. He is also holding a Bachelor’s degree in Law. He started his career in 1967 at HAL. He was deputed to DRDO in 1985 and assumed charge as Director, ADE, Bangalore. During 1995, he was elevated as Distinguished Scientist by DRDO. He is revered as being the driving force behind developing India’s light combat aircraft ‘Tejas’. As Program Director and Chief Designer of Light Combat Aircraft, he successfully directed the project leading to flight testing and clearance for limited series production He is the Fellow of Aeronautical Society of India and had also been as its President. He is also the Fellow of National Academy of Sciences and Indian National Academy of Engineering. He received Distinguished Alumnus Award from Indian Institute of Science and from IIT Bombay. He was honoured with Padma Shri by Government of India in 2002. Indian National Academy of Engineering conferred upon him, the Life Time Contribution Award in Engineering in 2006. He received Patent Award from Patent Office, Government of India for the invention of Interactive Triple Display Training Simulator (ITDTS). He received DRDO Life Time Achievement Award in 2008. Dr. Kota Harinarayana has been conferred with prestigious Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak Award in 2011 for his outstanding contribution in the aviation sector by Tilak Smarak Trust. Mr. Siam Varshney is a great entrepreneur and a believer excellence in whatever task he took. His contributions are in every endeavour: research and development, import substitution, book writing, organisation of workshops and conferences, upliftment of farmers economically and knowledge wise. he earned his B.Sc. (Engg.) degree with Honours in Mechanical Engineering in 1964 from erstwhile Benaras Engineering College (BENCO), now IIT (BHU).. Initially he started fabrication work at Durgapur. Next, he got into food and chemical business at Badaun. His first venture was Siva Masale. Later, he moved to Delhi and started manufacturing Essential Oil. He organized the farmers of Badaun and adjoining districts to grow Mentha crop and purchased Mentha oil. His other major fields of interest are Human Nutrition and Development of Agriculture with minimum irrigation requirement. Apart from producing Menthol, Peppermint and other routine products, Mr. Varshney’s main emphasis is on developing new bi-products from menthe oil .He has successfully developed certain medicinal oils for joint relief, cough, cold and breathing problems. He has been President of Essential Oil Association of India and Chairman of First Asian Aroma Ingredients Congress .He has written two books on MINT-Oil and Distillation Mr. Varshney is dedicated to his alma mater. He organized BENCO-64, 50thAnniversary Reunion, in February/March 2014. He provided leadership, time, funds and his staff to make it a memorable event. It was three days event with excellent planning, entertainment, and programs. Prof. Ajay Kapoor, a consistent and meritorious student since his early school days, received his B.Tech.and M.Tech. degrees with first class honours from this Department in 1980 and 1983, respectively. He did his Ph.D. in Engineering in 1988 from Cambridge University, United Kingdom, earning the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Cambridge Scholarship. After earning his Doctorate degree, he joined this Department as a Lecturer and continued up to Sep1990. He then joined Cambridge University as a Research Associate. He simultaneously chaired the Executive Committee of American Society of Mechanical Engineers of UK and Ireland Section.In 2007, Prof. Ajay moved to Swinburne University in Melbourne. Prof. Ajay is 3 times recipient of Best Paper Award in World Congress in Rail Research. He has earned many prestigious award including BHU Gold Medal in 1983, Young Academic Award in 1989, IMech ETA Stewart-Dyer- FH Trevethick award in 2005, Vice Chancellor’s Internationalisation Prize in 2010,Hind Rattan (Jewel of India) Award in 2013, George Julius Award from Engineers Australia in 2013.He has contributed a total of 8 books, patents, software. Since March 2016, he has been serving as Pro Vice Chancellor at Swinburne University looking after the portfolio of International Research Engagement & Development. His current research is focussed in mobility area and it is under his leadership that Swinburne Electric Vehicle Group has emerged as one of the largest EV research groups in the world. His group contributed to the first fully Australian designed and built Electric Bus in 2015. Mr. Naresh C. Jain, the owner of Diamond Express Car Wash, is widely recognized for his impactful social works and outstanding contribution through a long dedicated service to the society. Mr. Jain graduated from the erstwhile Banaras Engineering College of Banaras Hindu University (BENCO) in the year 1967 with a degree in Bachelor of Science (Engineering) in Mechanical Engineering from this Department. He then went on to earn his Master’s Degree from Cornell University, Ithaca,New York. After this, he started working as an Engineer for a clothing manufacturer.In 1984, he became Executive Vice President of a fortune 500 company at the young age of 39. Apart from owning 3 US registered Patents, he also has many unpatented innovations. He quit the job in 1996 and started a car wash business in 1999. With a strong passion and hard work, he made it thrive to success and the company is now recognized as the Diamond Express Car Wash. Mr. Jain has always been an ardent supporter of scholarship-based education system,particularly for deserving poor students. He made a generous donation of $100K for economically weaker meritorious students of this Institute. He has helped Jain hospital with financial contribution to build a new wing for upgrading their system and providing better facilities. Prof. Suhas Pandurang Sukhatme, the former director of IIT Bombay, is an eminent technocrat,teacher and researcher. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 1958 from Banaras Hindu University and obtained his Master’s and Doctoral in Mechanical Engineering. During his stay at MIT, he worked as a Research Assistant during 1959-64. He then moved to Dynatech Corporation, Cambridge, where he worked for a year as a Staff Engineer. In 1965, he returned to India to join the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. Prof. Sukhatme holds the Life Membership of the Indian Society for Heat and Mass Transfer (ISHMT) and the Solar Energy Society of India. He had been member of the Indian National Science Academy Council. For his extraordinary academic achievements, Prof. S P Sukhatme was awarded the Prince of Wales Gold Medal in 1958 by the Banaras Hindu University. In 1983, he received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). In 2001, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, making him the first recipient of the award. He, a recipient of the degree of the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) from the Banaras Hindu University, has also been awarded the civilian honour of Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2001. Prof. Sukhatme is an author of over 70 scientific papers, 3 widely recognised books and Heat and Mass Transfer. Moreover, he has various research reports in his name submitted to Atomic Energy Commission, USA; Department of Science and Technology, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Department of Non-Conventional Energy Sources, India. Prof. Kripa Shanker is internationally known for his excellent contributions to the teaching and research in production,operations management, supply chain management, quantitative and statistical decision models, computer-integrated/flexible manufacturing systems, cellular manufacturing and simulation. He is Gold Medalist for standing first in B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering (1970) from Banaras Hindu University. He obtained his M.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1972, and M.S. (1976) and Ph.D. (1977) in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering from Cornell University, USA. He joined IIT Kanpur as a faculty member in the Industrial and Management Engineering Department in 1978 where he has been serving as a Professor since 1987. He had been a visiting Professor at the Asian Institute of Technology Bangkok. He has also taught at Cornell, USA; Hanoi, Vietnam and Babol, Iran. He is currently Distinguished Professor at Industrial and Management Engineering Department, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He has been recipient of National Merit Scholarship and Government of India Scholarship for Studies Abroad. He has received Gold Medal for Best Paper on Robotics. He has been awarded ISTE National Award for Outstanding Academic, 2001, and Distinguished Alumnus Award from BHU in 2007. He has received several times certificate of appreciation as Best Teacher at IIT Kanpur and AIT Bangkok and Hanoi. He has supervised over 120 Masters and 15 Doctoral theses. He has published more than hundred papers in international journals and conference proceedings. He is associated with many professional bodies which include Operations Research Society of America, Operations Research Society of India, Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) (Sr. Member), Fellow of Indian National Academy Engineering. His major professional/administrative achievements with national impact include his initiating at IIT Kanpur, teaching and research in the field of manufacturing systems management, supply chain and logistical management, office automation, and starting a 2-year MBA Programme. He has been part of several missions of Government of India abroad as well as India. Mr Soumyo Sarkar is a well renowned name in financial sector. He has, as of now, over 30 years of experience in corporate world focusing on investment management and trading. Mr Sarkar graduated from the erstwhile Institute of Technology of the Banaras Hindu University in the year 1979, with a degree in B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering. He obtained his MBA degree from Tippie School of Management, University of Iowa. After completing his education, Mr Sarkar worked in prominent Wall Street firms such as Salomon Brothers, Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers from 1982 to 1990. He held various research and programming roles for over five years with these firms during his initial days. He served as the Managing Director and Founder Head of the Matched Book Arbitrage at Deutsche Bank in New York City from 1995 to 2009 making it one of the leading investment management organizations of the world. In 2010, Mr Sarkar founded Sumit Capital — an independent and institutionally-orientated investment advisory firm— in New York. Mr Sarkar is continuing to serve from the beginning as the Chief Executive Officer and Portfolio Manager of Sumit Capital. Since 2015, Mr Sarkar has also been a Member on the corporate board of Zero Gravity Solutions, an agricultural biotechnology public company an agricultural biotechnology public company commercializing its technology derived from and designed for space with significant value and applications for agricultural markets on Earth.
